Platform 1–12: Suvenír [NuDanceFest 2018]

Souvenir is a new form of study, research and presentation of an interdisciplinary work that isn’t intended to take itself too seriously. Souvenir is something one takes home from a trip or receives from someone. Selected artists from different art disciplines (fine art, literature, architecture, dance, sound art, multimedia) have convened, worked and collected their souvenirs across Slovakia. Along with the reflection of different spots, they had an opportunity to adopt some of their colleagues’ disciplines or to appropriate a form of presenting themselves to the audiences. The intention was to work as one group ego in joint balance of media. The artists had an opportunity to reflect on themselves and their work in dialogue with other art forms. The group came up with an improvised work touching upon staged elements of a solid construction.

The project idea builds upon the multimedia project Souvenir by the British artist Alastair McNeill. Platform 1–12 invited him as artistic director to implement the project in its initial stage. Even though the Souvenir by Slovak artists acknowledges its inspiration by the UK original work, in their interpretation the project acquires an altogether new content and experimental form.

Cast: Eva Andrášová (architecture), Mária Čorejová (drawing), Tomáš Danielis (dance and choreography), Zuzana Novotová-Godálová (artistic arrangement), Zuzana Husárová (literature), Ľubomír Panák (music), Jakub Pišek (multimedia)

The authors:

Mária Čorejová’s grandmother kept deer. Made of porcelain, with thermometers. Mária prefers to keep cats; she draws, exhibits and, at times, dreams about working as designers in a medium size meat factory.

Tomáš Danielis dances between Brussels, Graz, Moscow and the Slovak town of Topoľčany. Ideally “the neighbour” style. Seriously, however, he also makes actual contemporary choreographies that have earned him accolades just about everywhere, except for home.

Zuzana Husárová writes, reads and instructs. Not only at the university in Vienna and not just her own daughter Stella. The little one makes the world notice her largely by letting out specific sound, which is music to the ears of her father, the musician Ľubomír Panák. His lullabies composed for Stella have made it all the way to the radio.

Jakub Pišek is at home in new media and everywhere he can put his head down with a towel, toothbrush and face cream in his carefully kept plastic Kinder Egg. It is also his compact nature that earned him popularity across Europe, as well as in the US.

Eva Andrášová is an architect. After she had laid her hands on the demolition of the Platform 1–12 in Topoľčany and then helped its renewal, she packed her bags and has, ever since, been exploring architecture in Vienna.

Zuzana Novotová-Godálová finds public space the best venue to create and walk her baby. After meddling with streets in the UK, she returned to Slovakia to interfere with underground pedestrian passages. She likes to bring things together. Media as well as people.
