New Faces of Contemporary Dance [NuDanceFest 2018]

An evening dedicated to the youngest generation of dancers and choreographers from Slovakia and the Czech Republic who scored high in the competitions The Jarmila Jeřábková Award (CZ) and the Gala Art Moves (SK).

The Jarmila Jeřábková Award choreography competition has been running in Prague since 1999 and is part of the New Europe Festival since 2007. It is open to young artists aged up to 35 from the countries that joined the EU on the break of the millennia or whose membership is being negotiated. The key feature of the competition is presentation of a choreographic work to the music by contemporary Czech composer. Meanwhile, competitors also present their own free work. Two of the laureates of the last edition, Tina Breiová and Johana Pocková from Prague will feature for the first time in Slovakia.

Monika Částková and Helena Ratajová represent the latest generation of graduates of the Duncan Centre (est.1992), conservatory for contemporary dance in the Czech Republic. All choreographers have major potential to make a significant contribution to the Czech dance and are likely make their name beyond their homeland.

Gala Art Moves is a competition for young choreographers (most of whom are at the same time performing artists). Pilot edition of the competition was held in Bratislava in December 2017. Vladislav Šoltýs, the author of the idea and competition director, established the event to help promote the art of dance and to support young artists. Following in his footsteps and starting with the current edition, the Nu Dance Fest shall feature the NDF dramaturges’ choice of three works from among the ten Gala Art Moves finalists. The Festival presentation will thus become one of the awards given to the competing finalists, as an opportunity to confront their view with more senior artists, and to present themselves to a different type of audience. The 13th edition of the Festival will feature the works by Silvia Sviteková, Lukáš Bobalík and Lukáš Záhy. We trust the event helps the young artists embark on an illustrious career path.
