Tereza Hradilková & co.: Swish [Bratislava in Movement]

Tereza Hradilková was fascinated by the lightness, with which boxers jump through a skip rope, the rhythm of their movements and the coordination of their hands and feet. Rope jumping as a children’s game, but also as ambition and self-improvement.

„Are you jumping to get ahead, jumping past your old boundaries, or are you just jumping in a circle from which there is no escape?“ asks the performer whose piece was honoured as the 2017 Dance Production in the Czech Republic.

Tereza Hradilková found inspiration for the physically demanding challenge that Swishundoubtedly is, when working on the dance film Beating. Fascinated by the ease with which the boxers jump over the rope, their rhythm and the interplay of their hands and feet, she started exploring her own boundaries. The jump rope is more than just a children’s game; it also symbolizes ambition, desire for performance, self-improvement. “Do you skip over yourself, go beyond your borders, or are you trapped in a repeating circle that you cannot escape?” asks the performer, whose work won the Dance Production of the Year award in 2017.

Tereza Hradilková came up with the most unique staging concept in the program. To transmit the emotions of women in the course of their lives she adopted a popular and simple children’s game – jumping rope, which created such a fantastic stage metaphor as well as the conditions for the movement of the performance, which is physically very demanding.“ Nina Vangeli
