DANCE SEASON

Basic information

Dance season is a nationwide project, the main goal of which is the annual mapping of current work on the local scene of contemporary dance by theoreticians and journalists. The organizers and participants of the project strive for a better evaluation of the dance work, promoting discussions, but also making works more accessible to the audience and thus increasing the visibility of contemporary dance in a broader artistic context. One of the motives for the creation of the project was the preparation of the Slovak Dance Platform 2020 as well as the need to cultivate theoretical discussion.

Dance Season 2019/2020

Dance Season 2019/2020 is the second year of a nationwide project, the main goal of which is to map current work on the domestic scene of contemporary dance. The organizers and participants of the project strive for a better evaluation of the dance work, promoting discussions, but also making works more accessible to the audience and increase the visibility of contemporary dance in a broader artistic context. One of the motives for the creation of the project was the preparation of the Slovak Dance Platform 2020 as well as the need to stimulate reflection and cultivate heoretical  discussion.

After the first successful year, the project continues with reflections and analyzes of works from the contemporary dance scene, which were created in the current season 2019/2020 in Slovakia or in international cooperation (with at least one Slovak co-producer). Five personalities from the field of dance, theory and art criticism map the season and analyze and evaluate all works through a cycle of professional discussions and critical reflections. Outputs in the form of written reflections will be published on the website plast.dance.sk. The project will then culminate in a final public moderated discussion during the Slovak Dance Platform festival in November 2020.

The main partner of the project is the Slovak Arts Council.

Katarína Cvečková is the coordinator of the discussions and the editor of the outputs.

Dance season 2018/2019  a nationwide project of analyzes of performances of contemporary dance and discussions or just briefly Dance season is a cycle of discussions that maps current work on the local scene of contemporary dance. By mapping the state of creation and stimulating the reflection of the entire season, it seeks to enhance the dance season, increase the level of professional discussion and subsequently make works more accessible to the audience or increase the visibility of contemporary dance in a wider artistic context. Five dance critics, theorists and festival playwrights, together with dance playwright Maja Hriešik, analyze and confront their views on works premiered in the 2018/2019 season, which were created in Slovakia or in international cooperation with at least one Slovak co-producer. Their evaluations and analyzes of the performances will be published on the Contemporary Dance Platform website.

The project also included a public discussion on the planned first Slovak dance platform in 2020 in Bratislava, which was included in the Nu Dance Fest program in April 2019. The project will culminate in a final public moderated discussion during the Bratislava in Motion Festival in October 2019, aimed at evaluation of the whole dance season.
