Dance and movement intensive workshop with world-renowned choreographer Judith Sánchez Ruíz.

Judith will come to Divadlo Štúdio tanca to pass on the experience, techniques and tools she has acquired over her 30-year career as a dancer and choreographer.

The Your Own God workshop will be the vanguard of our collaboration with Judith, who is also preparing a fall premiere for Divadlo Štúdio tanca.

Workshop times: every day from 10AM – 4PM (lunch break from 12-1PM)

The workshop will include a public performance and collaborative jam session on June 28 at 7:00pm.

Your Own God’s research is based on Judith Sánchez Ruíz’s choreographic process and her experience as a performer of various techniques and styles throughout her long international career. The workshop triggers the „uncomfortable“ zone in participants, effectively breaking habits.  

The Your Own God tools, resource methodologies and practical exercises aim to unblock the mind from imitative academic dogma (which imposes mainstream style and decorative content). The focus is on each participant’s individual awakening and exploration of our functional and artistic potential. Dancers practice how to reset the mind through various exercises, branching and word associations that will lead to a much deeper connection.

Improvisation exposes dancers to a different perspective on performance. Vulnerability becomes part of the artist’s sense of being. The workshop presents an opportunity to fully engage in our own creative practices, moving from a casual view to a more compositional approach. In doing so, participants explore the relationship between set material and improvisation in relation to space, time, and other bodies, learning how to redirect their knowledge and tools into flow while discovering new ways to rehearse and develop a scored and structured performance.

The Your Own God workshop will include training in functionality and perspective, providing dancers with many ways to understand the initiation of movement in the body, allowing them to understand functionality from a creative approach, leading to specific organic qualities of movement as they work with the imagination.

Judith Sánchez Ruíz began her dance studies at the age of eleven at the National School of the Arts in Ciudad de la Habana, Cuba. She worked as a Berlin-based director in New York until 1999 and moved to Berlin in 2011. In 2010, she founded the JSR Company in New York, where she has created numerous choreographic works and site-specific projects with innovative artists around the world. Sánchez Ruíz is a former member of Sasha Waltz & Guests (2011-2014); Trisha Brown Dance Company (2006-2009); Mal Pelo (1997-1999); and DanzAbierta (1991-1996), among others. She has received grants from The Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the Baryshnikov Arts Center. Her work has been presented at many prestigious festivals and she has created two dance practices of her own.
